Newcastle United captain Fabricio Coloccini weighed in with a defensive performance of the highest quality to ensure his side travelled home from Old Trafford with a point against Manchester United on Saturday.
Leading by example, the Argentine veteran inspired a Magpies back-line that shut out the hosts' attacking line-up for start to finish, thus ensuring a valuable away draw and clean sheet for Steve McClaren's side.
The 33-year-old's cameo saw him make 13 defensive actions - including seven clearances and four interceptions - while he won 100% of his attempted head duels and tackles. Furthermore, he completed 87% of his total passes.
Coloccini signed an extension to his contract this month after weeks of speculation linking him with Crystal Palace – but not everyone believed it was the right decision. However, his efforts against the Red Devils will certainly have turned a few heads.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to the Newcastle skipper’s imperious defensive display.
No doubt Coloccini's performance yesterday was due to McLaren. With Pardew in charge it was all about him, players now believing again #NUFC— David Alun James (@Dai_Cwmheulog) August 23, 2015
3) Coloccini looked great, but we need to get another CB so we can keep him fresh. In 12 weeks he won't look like this unless he rests #NUFC— alex (@apdogtown) August 23, 2015
Coloccini is growing younger and Steven Taylor nice to see the bloke back in the starting XI.— Srijan Choudhary (@Observant_Me) August 23, 2015
