No blame for Bilic in West Ham defeat to Bournemouth says Nicholas

The former forward believes that there was little the manager could do to save his side in their loss.

Speaking on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday, broadcast from 12am on Saturday 22nd August, Charlie Nicholas refused to blame Slaven Bilic for West Ham’s defeat to Bournemouth.

The Hammers were beaten 4-3 at Upton Park in Saturday’s fixture, with a particularly poor defensive display from defenders Aaron Cresswell and Carl Jenkinson, who ended up being sent off, helping the Cherries to victory.

It was another disappointing display from Bilic’s side, who for the second week running found themselves two goals down and having to try and fight their way back into the game.

And while some were looking to point fingers at the Croatian, Nicholas says there was nothing he could do about the result.

“The manager couldn’t do a thing about this, it’s dreadful defending,” he told Soccer Saturday.

“Their passing was absolutely abysmal, they couldn’t get three passes going. It’s a test, Bilic would have got back to 2-2 and thought ‘oh we’ve turned a corner’ but they just switched back off again.”

Bilic to blame for bad mentality

While Nicholas refused to blame Bilic for the defeat, it is hard to imagine that some of the criticism won’t be heading his way after a second successive home defeat.

More than anything, he is to blame for failing to ensure his side have the right mentality heading into games, with their impressive win over Arsenal seemingly haven given them the belief they simply have to turn up to win.

That has obviously proven to be far from the case, with both Leicester and Bournemouth having taken advantage of such a dangerous mentality, with Bilic sure to make sure it changes in future.
