The American made a number of saves for the Toffees - but was blamed for both goals.
Is it the same old from Everton - one disappointing game, one good game and then back again?
Maybe not, as this wasn't necessarily the fairest of tests for Roberto Martinez's men. Manchester City played Chelsea right off the park at the Etihad Stadium last week and weren't going to be easy customers at Goodison this Sunday afternoon.
It showed as Manuel Pellegrini's side left with two goals, a clean sheet and all three points. Everton didn't play all that badly and were simply up against the in-form side of the Premier League.
But there were still certainly elements of disappointment for the Toffees faithful. Roberto Martinez's substitutions were slammed, while one performer in particular was singled out on social media.
Indeed, although there is a sense the overall defeat can't be solely pinned on him, Tim Howard drew ire from many Everton supporters on Twitter following the 2-0 loss to Manchester City. The 36-year-old made several saves against City but was considered to be at fault for both goals. Here's how Everton fans reacted to his display at Goodison...
Howard was so bad for the first goal, near post, basic goalkeeping #efc— Wayne Hogan (@Japper_11) August 23, 2015
Tim Howard is a bad bad liability that's awful goalkeeping #EFC— Everton All Sorts (@EvertonAllSorts) August 23, 2015
Not even gonna get wound up that it's Howard and Barry every single week - it's gonna happen week in week out! #efc— 17efc28 (@paul_shep20) August 23, 2015
And Howard should have done better with both goals 1st beaten inside his near post and 2nd if you come out don't come half hearted #EFC— Graeme Fergus (@gferg78) August 23, 2015
Must say it was a lovely goal against us, although I'll never get used to Howard's flapping ability #EFC— Gary Kinsey (@KinseyEFC) August 23, 2015
Everytime Howard does something good he has to restore equilibrium by having a howler!!! #EFC— Stef Small (@StefSmallx) August 23, 2015
