Newcastle’s Florian Thauvin claims Arsenal wanted him in the past

Newcastle United’s Florian Thauvin speaks of Arsenal's interest in the past.

Newly-signed Newcastle United attacking midfielder Florian Thauvin has revealed to The Daily Mail that Arsenal were interested in his services a couple of years ago.

The 22-year-old, who moved to Newcastle from Marseille earlier this week, claims that the Gunners were tracking him before he joined L’OM.

“Two or three seasons ago, Arsene Wenger perhaps made an approach with Arsenal, but apart from Arsenal, Newcastle are the only other club who have made an approach for me in the past,” Thauvin told The Daily Mail.

Could Florian Thauvin still find himself at Arsenal?

Thauvin has not even made his debut for Newcastle, but his claim that Arsenal wanted him in the past sounds ominous.

Arsenal are a much bigger club than Newcastle and are regulars in the Champions League.

This means that if the 22-year-old impresses for the Magpies in the next two or so years, then the Gunners could reignite their interest in him.

The fact that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger tracked him in the past suggests that the Frenchman rates his compatriot highly.

The former France Under-21 international may be happy to have joined the Magpies, but one should not be surprised if in the future he makes the switch to Arsenal.
