Arsenal host fellow top-four hopefuls Liverpool on Monday night in an encounter which will see two of the Premier League’s better target men in Olivier Giroud and Christian Benteke go head to head.
The latter will be making only his third official appearance in a Liverpool shirt after joining the club in a big-money deal from Aston Villa last month.
The Belgium international has all the attributes of your ideal target man – pace, power, strength, aerial ability and, of course, a keen eye for goal when handed the opportunity.
Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud is of a similar style, though arguably with less power and pace but more technique and finesse as the Frenchman has a habit of netting some eye-catching efforts.
They have both experienced a wonderful 2015, but we take a look at who has performed better ahead of the duo’s eagerly-anticipated clash at Emirates Stadium on Monday.
|Goals per game||Shots per Game||Key Passes per Game||Aerial Winners per Game||Touches per Game||Accurate Passes per Game||Ball Recoveries per Game||Appearances|
As per the table provided by Opta Stats, since the turn of the year, Liverpool’s new recruit has bettered Giroud in five of the seven key attacking categories.
Previously doing his damage at Aston Villa, Benteke has averaged more goals, key passes, aerial duel winners, touches and accurate passes per Premier League fixture.
The Gunners’ France international comes out on top with a higher average number of shots and ball recoveries per encounter, but his impressive 2015 record has not quite matched Benteke’s standards.
Many pundits have questioned how the former Genk man will fit in with the Reds’ conflicting style of play, though with his evident quality, there should be no fears regarding his adaptation to life at Anfield.
