Indeed, while most raved about Newcastle's solid defending away from home, the BBC pundit criticised an 'average' Manchester United side and only praised the visitors slightly, suggesting they have improved from their 'shocking' display at Swansea City.
Hartson took to Twitter after full-time:
Newcastle must have improved from last week's shocking display at Swansea.. Or were Man united average Again!!— John Hartson (@JohnHartson10) August 22, 2015
And, when the pundit and former striker was challenged by someone on Twitter, he made his reasoning clear.
Indeed, Hartson says giving Newcastle credit for improving was enough but suggested Toon supporters should expect more.
Yes I will you improved on last week.. That enough ? I like Newcastle but I expect more. So should you Fans! https://t.co/f2NvsP2Ccy— John Hartson (@JohnHartson10) August 22, 2015
Is the Welshman being harsh or realistic?
Kevin Kilbane also said on Final Score that Sunderland fans would want to see their club aiming for a top-six finish? But are the BBC pundits really on this planet?
The strange Sunderland comment aside, Newcastle can certainly be proud of a 0-0 draw at Manchester United considering their recent struggles. But the Magpies can definitely expect better in terms of performance levels and going forward. At least they are building from the back.
Do you agree with Hartson's firm approach?
