Peter Lovenkrands has told Sky Sports that Newcastle United need to sign a centre-back before the summer transfer window ends next month.
“I think for me, they should be looking at another centre-half,” the former Newcastle attacker told Sky Sports on Friday morning.
“They have (Fabricio) Coloccini and Steven Taylor, but it looks like Mike Williamson could be on his way out.
"That is an area where they should have a little more cover and need to strengthen up.”
Newcastle have signed as many as five players so far this summer, but only one of them is a defender.
DR Congo international Chancel Mbemba has joined from Belgian giants Anderlecht, but the Magpies do need another central defender.
The Premier League outfit struggled defensively last season, and under new head coach Steve McClaren, things have not improved at the back.
Newcastle have conceded four goals in two Premier League games already, and this is not sustainable in the long run.
The Magpies drew 2-2 with Southampton at St. James’ Park in their opening Premier League game of the season.
McClaren’s side went down 2-0 to Swansea City away from the home at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday and will take on Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday.
