During the ESPN FC show on BT Sport 1 on Tuesday morning, the former Liverpool defender explained why Lallana has not performed well for the Reds since his move from Southampton in the summer of 2014.
“The problem is that some players can’t handle playing on the big stage week in and week out, and the only thing you can say about him is he hasn’t performed,” said Nicol.
“He has ability, he has quality - he has shown that when he was with Southampton.
"He has actually shown that a couple of times with England, but for Liverpool he has shown nothing in 12 months.”
Lallana joined Liverpool from Southampton in the summer of 2014 and was expected to be a huge success at Anfield.
Things did not go according to plan for the 27-year-old, though, but he did have an overall encouraging season.
The Englishman scored five goals and created 32 chances in 27 Premier League appearances for Liverpool during the 2014-15 campaign.
Lallana had a pass accuracy of 83% and a shot accuracy of 46%, and won 17 headers, 30 dribbles and 40 tackles.
The 27-year-old has not had a great start to the 2015-16 campaign, despite featuring in both of Liverpool’s Premier League games.
The England international has created just one chance, has a pass accuracy of 80%, and has won three headers, five dribbles and four tackles.
Liverpool fans have responded to Nicol’s criticism of Lallana on HITC Sport, and below are some of the comments:
The Red Men: “Totally agree with Steve Nicol , he has been an absolute disappointment and have seen no improvement. Wants too many touches , is lightweight and gets bullied and has no end product because he hangs on to the ball too long.
“Not good enough and slows the team down when attacking. Gives the ball away to tother players and puts them into trouble also. Finishing not good enough either . A lot of money for another flop.”
Funkdoc: “Wish we got Andre Ayew, Ghanaian international who is everything Lallana isn't. You can tell Ayew loves scoring. “
oomesh: “Totally agree with you here...Lallana-> 25 million pounds!!! Another highly overvalued British player. Could have brought 4 Ayews with this money....Cry my beloved LFC.”
james russell: “I hope he doesn't start against Arsenal, we need more goals and Lallana isn't creating enough, I'd also like to see Can start, even if it means leaving Henderson on the bench, can and Milner are far better.”
Paul 35mm: “Lallana is a good player. Liverpool were after a star and paid star money. From that perspective, Lallana has been disappointing, but he can play for Liverpool or another big team; but it is looking more and more he's destined to be a squad player for a big club.
"I liken him to Stuart Downing. He struggled as a starter at Liverpool and Rogers showed no willingness to keep him as a squad player, but at West Ham he did the job nicely. Ultimately he moved to Middlesborough to see if he can help bring them up to the PL. I like Lallana, but he is not a star from any evidence I've seen.”
