We've all thought about doing this, but this guy actually did it!

We've all been there, you're playing Football Manager, you take over at a small team and then fall in love with some obscure cult heroes.

In fact, I still regale people at parties about how I took my plucky Gateshead side from the Conference to winning back to back Champions League's in less than a decade – I'm the proper life of a party.

However, we reckon this Italian fan has taken his love for Football Manager to the next level of obsession by travelling 3000 miles to Ireland to meet his cult hero.

19-year-old Alessandro Colombi took the pilgrimage from Livorno to Derry to see Derry City play and meet City striker Paddy McElroy who helped him lead his team to the Champions League in his save.

Speaking to The Derry Journal, Colombi recalled McElroy's reaction to his fanatic trip: "I wanted to meet Patrick after the game because I wanted to tell him how good of a player he is for me in ‘Football Manager’.

"I told him I was from Italy and that he was brilliant in the game. I don’t think he knew how to react but he gave me his autograph and we had a good laugh about it. Paddy looked at me like I was an alien, he must have thought I was mad."

Turns out Colombi decided to manage the Northern Irish side after reading a book about Bloody Sunday and has picked them as his side for the past few years.

Has this inspired you go to meet your Football Manager hero?
