Ex-Nottingham Forest winger Garath McCleary could be the perfect alternative to Michail Antonio for Derby County should Fawaz Al-Hasawi stick to his word

Nottingham Forest chairman Fawaz Al-Hasawi is reluctant to sell Michail Antonio to Derby County this summer.

According to the BBC, Derby County have already seen a bid rejected for Nottingham Forest winger Michail Antonio and Fawaz Al-Hasawi has made it abundantly clear via Twitter that he has no plans on selling his star player to the club's local rivals.

Despite the former Sheffield Wednesday winger reportedly going on strike, the Kuwaiti businessman still seems very reluctant to allow the winger join the Rams and it could be a frustrating end to the transfer window to Paul Clement as he looks to add the finishing touches to his side.

With three Championship games of the season gone, Derby haven't had the start they would have wanted and now have four central midfielders sitting on the treatment table. It has exponentially increased Clement's desire to add to his squad and Antonio looks to be a major part of that puzzle.

Nevertheless, if Fawaz does stick to his guns and refuses to sell the winger to the Rams, it could see Clement make a late move for an alternative.

We take a look at why an ex-Forest player in Garath McCleary could be the perfect alternative to Antonio for Clement.

Why would McCleary be the ideal choice?

The influential Reading winger is currently out with an injury he sustained while on international duty with Jamaica. However, he remains a good option for later on in the season once he returns to fitness.

Like Antonio, McClarey is a very direct winger and can put defenders on their heals with his pace, dribbling technique and agility.

He has proven himself adequate in the Premier League and continues to impress in the Championship as one of the division's top wide men. Therefore, it's easy to see why he could be classed as an ideal alternative for the Rams to consider.

The price tag for both players is likely to be on similar scale, however, without Fawaz involved, it will be much easier for Derby to push on and complete the deal as the rivalry is completely subtracted from the business.

Clement is in dire need of adding an edge to his side as the first three games have shown that well organised defensive sides can null the impressive attack he has at his disposal.
