Report: Sunderland make contact for France under-21 star Yassine Benzia, face stern competition

Sunderland have been linked with a move for Lyon star Yassine Benzia.

According to the French editorial Mercato365, Sunderland have made contact for Lyon star Yassine Benzia as they look to boost their attacking options.

The Black Cats have begun the 2015/16 Premier League campaign in disastrous fashion, losing both their opening games and shipping seven goals in the process.

While defensive additions are needed at the back, Dick Advocaat’s men also desperately lack creativity going forward as they are too often pedestrian in and out of possession.

The club are seemingly actively looking at bringing in some much-needed additions before the transfer deadline and Mercato365 claim one of the players in question is Yassine Benzia.

Who is Yassine Benzia?

Benzia, 20, is an attacker currently on the books of Lyon having come through the club’s youth academy. He has represented France at all youth levels, scoring six goals in nine matches for the U21s.

Born in Algeria, he has often been compared with former club great Karim Benzema yet so far he has been given little chance to shine at Lyon, prompting speculation over his future.

The situation and competition:

According to Mercato365, Sunderland have been in touch with the player’s entourage over a possible move to the Stadium of Light but no reports of a bid are yet to surface.

While Nice and Bologna have also been accredited with an interest, the most active team pushing for a deal is fellow Ligue 1 outfit Rennes who have had an offer of around £2.1 million accepted.

However, the player is said to be apathetic over a move to Rennes leaving the possibility open for another potential suitor to make a bid and convince the player to move elsewhere.
