Arsenal have dispatched scouts to check out Lars Bender in action, report Tuttomercatoweb.
Gunners representatives checked out Bender's performance for Bayer Leverkusen against Lazio in this week's Champions League qualifiers.
Bender has been on Arsenal's radar for a while, reported by The Guardian to have had a bid of £18.5 million rejected in 2013.
The 26-year-old is an accomplished defensive midfielder, who would slot in ideally alongside Francis Coquelin, or provide competition for the Frenchman. He has a contract at Leverkusen until 2019.
Despite featuring in Champions League qualifiers, he would be eligible to feature in the group stages for Arsenal if he signs.
Leverkusen lost the first leg of their tie 1-0 to Lazio, with all to play for in the return.
The Tuttomercatoweb does not speculate whether Arsenal will be submitting a bid, but the fact they are watching him play suggests they are exploring their options heading into the final fortnight of the transfer window.
