The Tottenham Hotspur boss has been frank when discussing the 23-year-old during his weekly press conference.
According to the Independent, the Argentine has declared that the winger is not for sale.
But he has also sent a clear message to Lamela that his inconsistent form and unfulfilled promise of success must this season be put to an end.
Indeed, he is quoted as telling reporters: "We need Lamela to show his real quality and we hope that this is the season he really shows his quality."
Far from an unconditional rebuttal of all offers, then, and rightly so.
One year ago, Tottenham fans were having the exact same debate about the 23-year-old winger as they are now. Plenty slate him and plenty say he *will* come good at White Hart Lane.
But that's exactly the problem. Those that say he will come good were saying that last season and, in a year's time, there has been no real progress. They are still waiting for his potential to unlock.
If, in a year's time, Lamela is in exactly the same position, Spurs would have simply waited too long. Glenn Hoddle recently suggested the Argentine will be out the door in January if he doesn't perform.
And Pochettino sounds as though he is issuing Lamela with a very real ultimatum - one the Tottenham fans who have grown tired of the winger have wanted for a very long time.
