Liverpool's youngsters were in Under-21 Premier League action last night when they took on Everton in the first 'mini-derby' of the season as the two sides met in Southport.
It all seemed to be going to plan for the Reds as they raced into a 3-0 lead courtesy of a Harry Wilson penalty, a terrific strike from Joao Carlos Teixeira and a close range strike from Sergi Canos as Liverpool took advantage of an out of sorts Everton in the first half, before they got a goal back before the half time whistle via a deflection.
From then on it was all Everton and the Reds ended up walking away with just a point after being in a commanding position.
There were several familiar names on show including a midfield partnership of Jordan Rossiter and Cameron Brannagan, while Joe Maguire also played at left-back having been part of the first team squad's tour of the Far East and Australia during pre-season, while Tiago Ilori played the first 45 minutes.
But the stand-out player for the Reds seems to have been Teixeira who spent last season on loan at Brighton & Hove Albion before sustaining a broken leg that meant he was sidelined until the recent pre-season tour.
The 22-year-old was playing in the number 10 role, where his technique and ability was well on show and he seemed to impress some Reds fans on Twitter.
The only thing is, a report in the Liverpool Echo this morning indicating that he may be leaving on loan again will dash hopes of some fans of seeing him make some sort of contribution to the first team this season.
Here is a selection of what was said:
So many lads in this team who wouldn't look out of place in the first team squad. Brannagan, Wilson, Teixeira all look close in my eyes.— Green Scouser (@Green_Scouser) August 19, 2015
Joao Teixeira looks like a great young talent. Would love to see him get an opportunity during the season. #lfc— Adam Lallana (@AdamLovlallana) August 19, 2015
