Premier League duo Everton and Southampton are reportedly interested in Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk.

John Hartson said on BT Sport Europe on Wednesday evening that Virgil van Dijk will leave Celtic before the end of the summer transfer window.

The 40-year-old former Celtic striker believes that the Scottish Premiership champions should try to get around £16 million as transfer fee for the 24-year-old defender.

“I think every Celtic fan doesn’t want him to go,” Hartson said on BT Sport Europe on Wednesday evening during the build-up to Celtic’s Champions League playoff round first-leg tie against Malmo at Celtic Park. “I think he will (go)…

“I think this £8 million, he is in that bracket, I think you have got to double that, I really do... But I am certain that they (Celtic) should get around double the £8m that has been reported.”

Future uncertain

According to The Sunday People, Premier League duo Everton and Southampton are interested in signing the Dutch defender before the summer transfer window shuts next month.

In fact, earlier this month, The Scottish Sun claimed that the Saints have made a bid of £8m for the Dutch centre-back (click here to read more).

Van Dijk has been a huge success at Celtic and is one of the best players in the Scottish Premiership at the moment.

In fact, the 24-year-old is probably the best centre-back in the Scottish top tier, and it is understandable why Everton and Southampton are both claimed to be interested in him.
