It has been reported by the British newspaper that the English midfielder himself is interested in moving to Forest.
Should Nottingham Forest sign Joey Barton?
Barton is a free agent at the moment, having left Queens Park Rangers at the end of the 2014-15 season following their relegation from the Premier League.
This means that Forest will not have to pay any transfer fee to secure the services of the former Newcastle and Manchester City star.
However, wages will be a problem. Due to Financial Fair Play regulations, the Championship club will not be able to pay the 32-year-old an extravagant salary.
Barton is not one of the best midfielders around, but his combative qualities and experience of playing in the Championship will help Forest in their attempt to finish in the top six this season.
