Plenty of activity is expected at St James' Park before the close of the window
Manager Sinisa Mihajlovic is keen to strengthen a squad that could only manage a 10th place finish last season and has reportedly identified the Frenchman as a potential target.
The report claims that Milan were quoted €22 million (£15.5 million) as the price required to prise Sissoko away.
Will he go?
The 26-year old has been an ever-present in the Magpies side over the last few seasons and has generally been a standout player, despite semi-regular bouts of apparent disinterest.
His form has varied but on his day he is by far and away Newcastle’s most dangerous player and it’s a squad which is hardly overflowing with quality attacking options, so his sale would be a surprise to say the least.
The remaining weeks of the transfer window are now critical for Steve McClaren, with the squad still light in a number of key areas, and retaining the services of the former Toulouse man should be high on the agenda.
Additions to the squad are required and the notion of selling one of the team’s major attacking forces should not be entertained but despite their current struggles, the lure of one of football's great names could prove an attractive proposition for the Newcastle man.
