Newcastle should sign Lingard and Austin and give Armstrong a chance from January

St James Park Two

Discussing three things Newcastle United should do this season to ensure a successful campaign.

Newcastle United have not had the best of starts to their new Premier League campaign, picking up just one point to date after drawing with Southampton and losing to Swansea City the following weekend.

But there is still time to add more new faces to the club this summer and below we take a look at three decisions that could define their season:

Bid big for Austin

Newcastle may have signed Aleksandar Mitrovic from Anderlecht but the young forward was always going to take time to settle at St James’ Park and he has currently got more yellow cards than goals.

That should change over time but the Magpies could do with an experienced front-man and Charlie Austin is the perfect option.

They would have to bid big to tempt Queens Park Rangers into business but it could be the best move manager Steve McClaren makes in his entire time in charge.

Give Lingard a stage on which to shine

Newcastle could do with more width on the left and a move for Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard would solve that particular problem.

The 22-year-old is highly-rated at Old Trafford but it is hard to see him getting many chances considering the players ahead of him in the pecking order.

As a result, a move to Newcastle could suit all parties – even if it was initially on loan given his current deal runs until the summer of 2018.

Throw Adam Armstrong in from January

Some Newcastle fans may say – in hindsight – that Adam Armstrong should never have been sent out on loan in the first place. But since his temporary move to Coventry City the 18-year-old has given further proof of just how deadly he is in front of goal.

The teenager already has five goals in three appearances for the League One side and when his loan spell ends in January he should be thrown straight into the Magpies’ starting line-up in an attempt to maintain his form in the top flight.

Either that or just recall him now…
