Massimo Luongo refers to Tottenham's Ryan Mason as an inspiration

QPR Massimo Luongo has named Tottenham's Ryan Mason as his inspiration in his pursuit of Premier League football.

Queens Park Rangers midfielder Massimo Luongo suggests that former Tottenham Hotspur and Swindon Town team-mate Ryan Mason remains an inspiration in his efforts to become a Premier League player.

While discussing his decision to leave Tottenham for Swindon on a permanent move three seasons ago, Luongo compared his career path to that of Spurs' Harry Kane and Ryan Mason.

All three players were graduates of the White Hart Lane academy, yet while Kane and Mason have made such progress that they are now England internationals, Luongo is still trying to prove he is good enough to be recognised alongside his former team-mates.

Speaking of his career to date, the Australian midfielder told the London Evening Standard the following:

"I chose to take a different path from Harry [Kane] and Ryan [Mason]."

"Ryan and Harry were able to use loans to eventually get to play in the Premier League but I am trying to do it a different way by coming through the lower leagues."

Loungo then spoken of his closeness to Mason, who he referred to as an inspiration.

The 24-year-old also enjoyed a loan spell at Swindon Town, recording 18 league appearances, while scoring five goals in total.

“They inspire me, Ryan probably the most. We were closer and I still talk to him. He didn’t have the most success going out on loan, he had injuries. But he stuck with it and got there."

Now, just two seasons later, Mason is featuring on a regular basis for Tottenham in the Premier League, having cemented his status as a key player in Mauricio Pochettino's side.

Two years the Englishman's junior, Luongo, who has already made two league appearances for QPR this term, will no doubt be hoping to join his former team-mate in the top flight next season.
