Gary Lineker recounts watching Memphis Depay in pre-season, Adrian Clarke suggests a weakness

Memphis Depay was in superb form for Manchester United against Club Brugge in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Tottenham Hotspur legend Gary Lineker said on BT Sport Europe on Tuesday evening what he thought of Memphis Depay when he saw him play in a pre-season friendly.

The former Spurs striker was impressed with the performance of the Manchester United winger against Barcelona in the USA.

Lineker said that he wanted to rave about the 21-year-old’s talent to everyone, but he was surprised at the start the youngster made to the 2015-16 Premier League season.

“I saw him play in California against Barcelona in a pre-season friendly,” the 54-year-old former Everton and Tottenham star said on BT Sport Europe while presenting the Champions League game between United and Club Brugge at Old Trafford.

“He was outstanding, and I thought of telling everybody that he could play, and then in the first two games of the season, he was really quiet, and I thought ‘Oops’.”

Depay joined United from Dutch champions PSV earlier this summer amid much hype and expectation.

The youngster did not start the season well, though, as he struggled to make an impact in the opening two games in the Premier League.

In almost 150 minutes of league football, the 21-year-old managed to create just one chance and had a shot accuracy of 20%.

However, on Tuesday evening, Depay announced himself to the Old Trafford faithful, playing a man-of-the-match role in United’s 3-1 home win against Club Brugge in the first leg of the Champions League playoff round.

Depay scored two goals and provided the assist for the other during the 90 minutes.

Former Arsenal midfielder Adrian Clarke was also impressed with Depay’s performance on Tuesday, but he suggested on Twitter a weakness in his game.
