Manchester United went a long way to securing their passage to the group stages of the Champions League on their return to the competition after a 3-1 win over Club Brugge at Old Trafford last night in the first leg of their play-off game. However, they didn't have it all their own way.
Old Trafford was stunned when United fell behind early on to a Michael Carrick own goal but they hit back with a well-taken strike from Memphis Depay who opened his account for the Red Devils in the process. His second strike was even better as his curling attempt found the net to put United's noses in front just before the interval.
After a second half which was fairly low-key by comparison, which saw the visitors reduced to 10 men in the process when Brandon Mechele was sent off for two bookable offences. It seemed as if Louis van Gaal's side were going to take a slender lead to Belgium this week, only for Marouane Fellaini to head home after coming off the bench with the last act of the game in order to give them some breathing space.
