Surely Southampton will not be saying goodbye to their excellent centre-back any time soon despite recent links with Aston Villa.
While the likes of Dejan Lovren and Toby Alderweireld have made plenty of headlines and subsequently seen plaudits rain down on them during their own spells at St Mary’s, Fonte has quietly gone about his business while proving time and again just how vital he is to the south coast club.
He may be 31 but with two years left on his current contract there is no reason for Southampton to cash in on Fonte just yet, and with fans divided on the contribution of fellow centre-back Maya Yoshida, the Portuguese is arguably more important than ever.
Villa could do with defensive reinforcements but Fonte is surely going nowhere as Southampton look to continue their excellent progress under Koeman last season.
With 227 matches under his belt and his ongoing importance to Southampton clear, Fonte really is one of the unsung heroes of the Premier League.
He rarely gets the credit he deserves but it is no surprise other clubs are seemingly admirers of his qualities. The thing is: Koeman is never going to sell so Villa – and anyone else for that matter – will have to look elsewhere.
