Speaking to the official Aston Villa website, Sherwood has given an update on the fitness levels of Jack Grealish, Carles Gil, Jose Angel Crespo and Jores Okore.
Sherwood said: “I thought Jack was very good [against Derby]. He played to the last minute. He looked fit enough to maybe be up for selection this weekend. Carles came off with a tight groin which is an indication the lack of training he has actually done. He will get fitter.
“Jores is not fit yet. But he is out there running. Jose is still not fit. He picked up a groin problem a few minutes into the Nottingham Forest game.”
Grealish and Gil both featured in a Villa Under-21 victory over Derby this week, with Grealish playing the entire 90 minutes after missing all of pre-season with a hamstring injury.
He looks to be almost ready for first-team action, and Sherwood has admitted that winger could be selected this weekend as Villa take on Crystal Palace.
Gil is still not yet ready to feature for the senior side, and was taken off towards the end of the Derby game due to a recurrence of his injury. However, he lasted long enough in the fixture to suggest that he is close to fully recovering, and a return to competitive action should not be too far away.
Both Jores Okore and Jose Crespo are still not ready to feature for Sherwood’s side, but they are in light training, suggesting that their readiness for the Premier League is closer than first thought.
