Derby County are reportedly keen on signing Harrison Reed from Southampton.

According to the Times, Derby are looking to take Reed on a season-long loan from Southampton.

The Rams are still in the market for new signings despite Paul Clement bringing in a host of talented players, and Reed would provide further midfield cover following the injury to Will Hughes.

Reed is not a direct replacement for Hughes in his style of play, and the 20-year-old is generally considered as a deep-lying playmaker. Hughes plays in a more advanced role than Reed, but the Southampton youngster has shown himself to be a versatile option in the middle of the park.

He is renowned for his precise passing and composure on the field of play, as well as his ability to read the game well so as to ensure he can control everything ahead of him.

The England youth international already has made 20 appearances for the Saints first-team, and he is considered one of the best prospects in their academy system.

However, he looks unlikely to make much of an impact this term due to the signings of Oriol Romeu and Jordy Clasie, and the Saints will likely consider a loan move the best option.

Derby represent the best option for Reed’s development due to the technical football they play, and the youngster could benefit from playing a full campaign of competitive football in a high pressure league.
