One of Newcastle United's summer signings has impressed a senior member of staff.
Newcastle United legend Peter Beardsley has been speaking to the club’s official website after his under-21 side drew with Blackburn Rovers earlier this week.
The 19-year-old did not get on the score-sheet but he did impress, and Beardsley was full of praise for the former Northampton Town striker after the game.
“Ivan had a couple of efforts late on and looked sharp,” Beardsley told nufc.com. “He will be good for us.
“I really like what I’ve seen from him so far. He’s big, strong and shoots on sight, but he can also create and put a couple of great crosses in, which we could have scored from.”
Toney previously played 60 times for Northampton, scoring 13 goals and providing six assists in the process.
He was signed by Newcastle for an undisclosed fee earlier this month, joining fellow newcomers Chancel Mbemba, Aleksander Mitrovic and Georginio Wijnaldum at the club.
In the short term he will develop his game further for the under-21s but if he is as good as Beardsley believes, he may make his senior debut for Newcastle sooner rather than later.
