Ex-Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann has taken to social networking site Twitter in order to praise his former club’s start to the Premier League season and revel in the signing of Christian Benteke.
The Reds have begun the campaign with 1-0 wins against Stoke City and Bournemouth, with new signing Benteke grabbing the winner during yesterday’s clash with the Cherries at Anfield.
The signing of the Belgium international striker has been questioned by many pundits and Premier League observers alike, notably because his style of play is different to that of Liverpool’s.
However, he is a footballer whose first touch, quick movement and powerful running are vastly underrated, and a player of his intelligence should have little problems adapting.
Taking to Twitter after the Reds' victory over Eddie Howe’s men, Hamann said that he believes that Brendan Rodgers’ side have done all which has been asked of them and cited Benteke as the perfect man for the club.
Great start for BR and LFC. 2 clean sheets and 6 points. Couldn't have asked for more, Benteke exactly the player the club needed.— Didi Hamann (@DietmarHamann) August 17, 2015
Aside from his goal against Bournemouth, Benteke was busy throughout, and there were times when the hosts tried to slow the game down to his benefit when it wasn't particularly necessary.
With Philippe Coutinho picking up the ball in those pockets, the former Villa striker has enough pace about him to latch on to those through-balls and leave the defenders in his wake.
While he may enjoy getting on the end of crosses, the 24-year-old is also a big threat through the middle.
In the two games this season, the Merseysiders don’t exactly look like the fluid side of two years ago but defensively they appear more organised and less likely to allow opportunities.
Goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has not had much to do in terms of shot-stopping and claiming crosses, and that is largely due to the back four in front of him performing to expectations.
