Recent Liverpol target Mateo Kovacic is to sign with Real Madrid.
Real Madrid are close to sealing a surprise transfer for Croatian midfielder Mateo Kovacic, report The Guardian.
It is reported that a fee has been agreed between the two clubs in the region of £20 million, with the deal expected to be confirmed on Monday.
The La Liga side are well stocked in midfield, and Kovacic was been inconsistent at Inter Milan, but he is clearly a player new boss Rafa Benitez knows well from his time in La Liga.
Benitez has in the process beaten out competition from former club Liverpool, who had been strongly linked with Kovacic's signature.
The Metro reported just 24 hours ago that Liverpool were lining up a £21 million offer for him, while The Mirror speculated back in June that the Reds were advanced in their negotiations for the midfielder.
Hailed as a future star since breaking into the Dinamo Zagreb team at just 16-years-old, Kovacic signed for Inter in 2013, but has seen a revolving door of managers and different approaches hinder his progression.
Liverpool, having spent well already this summer, clearly did not want to meet Inter's asking price, but at the same time Kovacic's agent deserves praise after securing him a move to Real after his time at Inter, which yielded just eight goals in two seasons.
Nonetheless when Real Madrid win a race to a player's signature, it can prompt a different view of whether Liverpool made the right decision not to push harder.
A look at the reaction to his imminent transfer from Liverpool fans suggests they feel the club have missed a trick...
Watch Kovacic go on to become one of the world's best CMs now. Can't understand it. Deep lying playmaker. Surely perfect for BR #LFC— Anfield Honesty (@AnfieldHonesty) August 16, 2015
