David Gold responds to Sam Allardyce

David Gold believes that West Ham United can finish in a European spot in the Premier League this season.

West Ham United co-chairman David Gold has told BBC Sport that the team can finish in a European position this season.

The Hammers ended up 12th in the Premier League during the 2014-15 campaign in what was Sam Allardyce’s final season as manager of the London outfit.

Last week, Allardyce was quoted as saying by Skysports.com that West Ham will fail to finish in a European position in the Premier League this term.

“If David Sullivan and David Gold have told Slaven Bilic that they expect to get into Europe this year then I think it's way beyond the capabilities of the squad at this moment in time,” the former Newcastle United boss was quoted as saying by Skysports.com.

Gold disagrees with Allardyce’s opinion and has told BBC Sport: "I don't think it is beyond our capabilities. We don't need to set targets, Slaven sets the targets for himself.”

Can West Ham United finish in a European spot?

West Ham are an ambitious club and are aiming to finish at least in the top eight of the Premier League this season.

The Hammers have a good bunch of players, but they do need a prolific striker who can put away the chances that summer signing Dimitri Payet is going to create as the season progresses.

Slaven Bilic’s side kicked off their 2015-16 premier League campaign with a 2-0 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, but on Saturday they slumped to a 2-1 home defeat to Leicester City.
