Chris Sutton says Celtic should demand £20m for Virgil van Dijk

Premier League duo Everton and Southampton are reportedly interested in Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk.

Chris Sutton has written in The Daily Record that Celtic should demand £20 million as transfer fee for Virgil van Dijk.

According to The Sunday People, Premier League duo Everton and Southampton are both interested in signing the Dutch defender before the summer transfer window shuts next month.

Sutton believes that the 24-year-old centre-back is worth at least £15 million and has claimed that he is better than Everton youngster John Stones.

“Celtic should be demanding £20million for Virgil van Dijk,” the former Celtic striker wrote in The Daily Record. “If they can’t get that he should not go for a penny less than £15m.”

“Look at John Stones’s attributes and at van Dijk’s attributes and take them in isolation, Stones can’t do anything better than van Dijk does,” added Sutton.

“In fact I’d say van Dijk is physically stronger and better in the air. What goes against van Dijk, quite simply, is he plays in Scottish football.”

Is Virgil van Dijk worth £15 million?

Van Dijk has been a huge success at Celtic and is one of the best players in the Scottish Premiership at the moment.

In fact, the 24-year-old is probably the best centre-back in the Scottish first division, and it is understandable why Everton and Southampton are both claimed to be interested in him.

The former Groningen star would be a good signing for either of the Premier League clubs, but many will argue that he is not worth £20m.

The Scottish Premiership is a one-horse race with a number of average and poor teams. Van Dijk may look great domestically, but he has yet to star in Europe.
