For those football fans who had forgotten Stephen Ireland was still around, the 28-year-old gave an emphatic reminder of his talent when he came off the bench for Stoke City against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday
The midfielder may have only played 30 minutes but he finished the match as the standout performer, changing the game as Stoke came from 2-0 down to claim a point in dramatic fashion.
Ireland has played 50 matches for Stoke but he is very much a bit-part player for now; but that could be about to change after his brilliant substitute appearance this weekend.
Ireland’s energy completely transformed proceedings after Tottenham had gone two goals ahead courtesy of Eric Dier and Nacer Chadli, and Stoke got back into the game when Marko Arnautovic scored from the penalty spot.
Ireland then supplied a wonderful cross for Mame Biram Diouf to equalise, reminding everyone just how good he can be on his day.
After the match we took to Twitter to see what Stoke fans thought of Ireland’s latest performance and you can read a selection of what we found below:
Delighted with the contribution of Stephen Ireland yesterday. He hasn't featured in any fan's starting XI but he was 100% committed #SCFC— Paul Nixon (@mrpaulnixon) August 16, 2015
Excellent 50th appearance in a Stoke shirt from Stephen Ireland yesterday. I have a feeling number 51 might be from the start at Norwich.— Every Step of Stoke (@EssentialSCFC) August 16, 2015
Lovely to see Stephen Ireland produce that performance for Stoke today. Such a talented player and decent bloke. Hope this is a springboard.— Paul Tyrrell (@TyrrellPaul) August 15, 2015
The way Stephen Ireland played when he came on for Stoke is what our midfield has been missing since the stegosaurus croaked it. #MOTD— Nick Holden (@nhldn) August 15, 2015
