Southampton lost 3-0 to Everton yesterday with the former Chelsea man coming on at half-time.
Southampton would have gone into yesterday’s game with Everton full of confidence. The Saints have a good recent record against Everton on the South-Coast and would have been hoping to extend that form.
However they were comfortably beaten by The Toffees, who won the game 3-0 thanks to goals from Romelu Lukaku, who netted twice, and Ross Barkley – who had a fantastic game in the midfield.
One plus for Southampton was getting to see their most recent signing in action.
The player in question is of course Oriol Romeu. Signed from Chelsea earlier in the week the Spaniard spent last season on loan at German side VfB Stuttgart. His career has been halted by injury problems but he will now be hoping to get into the swing of things after his move to St Mary’s.
He was of course disappointed with the result on his debut, after coming on for Dusan Tadic at half time, expressing so via Twitter last night:
It's a pity to lose my first match. Sure we'll have much better days at St Mary's Stadium! Thanks for your welcome! pic.twitter.com/mT0jH3Mkkv— Oriol Romeu (@OriolRomeu) August 15, 2015
He was also lucky to stay on the pitch. His challenge on James McCarthy might have seen red from other referees, although it was probably a fair but strong challenge. However, he could have been booked again not long after – which would have made for a forgettable debut.
He will now be hoping for some regular football at the club in which he can highlight his talent to his new fans.
