The Reds have been long linked with a move for the Croatian and are still interested in his signature.
The Reds have been linked with the midfielder for much of this summer transfer window, but a move is yet to materialise or even an agreement between the two parties.
Although at this point a move is still pure speculation, they did bid reportedly £17.7million in an attempt to sign him earlier in the window, something that was quickly rejected by Roberto Mancini’s side.
They are likely to be holding out for more than £20million for their star midfielder, who was one bright spark in an otherwise lacklustre and disappointing campaign last season for Milan.
Should Liverpool make another move for Kovacic, the Telegraph believes they will face firm competition from Inter’s fierce rivals AC Milan who have been busy improving their squad this summer with a number of big money purchases.
A long-term replacement for Steven Gerrard
If Rodgers truly is interested in Kovacic, it may be that he is eyeing a long-term replacement for departed legend Steven Gerrard.
Gerrard was the heart of the Liverpool midfield for almost the entirety of his career, with him being the major creative force in the side for a number of years.
The Reds are currently missing that in the centre midfield areas though. Phillipe Coutinho can provide it from the number ten area, but the likes of Jordan Henderson and James Milner behind him are more recognised for their high work rate than their creative spark.
A move for Kovacic would make sense in that regard the, although with them having been so busy this summer, it will be interesting to see whether the Liverpool board are willing to support their boss with further funds for a move for the Croatian.
