Manchester City defeated Chelsea 3-0 with a dominant performance.
The Citizens suffered last season, finishing eight points behind the Blues as Jose Mourinho’s men strolled to the Premier League title.
City’s disappointment has prompted changes this summer, with Raheem Sterling coming in and players such as Vincent Kompay, Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri showing that extra fight.
With an opening day 3-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion illustrating the team’s intentions this season, their win against Chelsea this evening may make them the new title favourites already.
Goals from Sergio Aguero, Kompany and Fernandinho gave the hosts a resounding win, but it was their dominance throughout which impressed Lineker and Shearer most.
Mightily impressive performance from Manchester City. One worthy of taking over from Leicester at the top....well almost.— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) August 16, 2015
With strength in depth all over the pitch, City’s squad is in some contract to their rivals on Sunday as the West London outfit struggle for options in the final third.
It’s all well and good having the financial backing, but Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is seemingly having a hard time identifying those elite players who are either available or at a level now good enough to play for his team.
Without those extra additions, it’s difficult to see how they can expect to retain their title considering their rivals have all made great strides this summer to bridge the gap – no more so than Pellegrini’s men.
