According to a report in the Mirror, Newcastle United are on the verge of securing a deal in the region of £12 million for Marseille winger Florian Thauvin.
Newcastle boss Steve McClaren has been busy strengthening his side this summer, scouring the foreign market to bring in players such as Chancel Mbemba, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Giorginio Wijnaldum.
Despite the additions, however, the Magpies are still short in wide areas and are lacking a genuine winger as Moussa Sissoko has started the first two games of the season playing at right midfield.
Florian Thauvin has long been linked with a switch to St James’ Park, and now fresh reports in the Mirror claim the Geordies are hopeful of securing a deal for him in the coming week.
What would Florian Thauvin offer Newcastle?
Other than genuine width, the 22-year-old has plenty of attacking ability which was illustrated last season as he was directly involved in nine Ligue 1 goals for Marseille.
Moreover, Thauvin boasts plenty of skill on the ball and is capable of going on marauding runs in order to create space for his teammates and take opponents out of the game.
While he would be a good addition to Newcastle’s first-team now, at 22 he has plenty of years ahead of him and likewise with the club’s fellow summer signings, Thauvin is also one for the future.
Buying young talent allows the team to build a true identity and feature stars who have played together for a number of years, developing excellent on-field relationships and a steady base for future additions.
