Everton striker Romelu Lukaku notched two goals during his side’s 3-0 win at Southampton and pulled clear of Liverpool’s Christian Benteke in the Belgian scoring stakes.
The two strikers both hit the ground running during the 2012/13 campaign, with Lukaku on loan at West Bromwich Albion and Benteke starring at Aston Villa in his first season in English football.
It has been a tussle on the goals front which has gone back and forth, yet now the duo are leading the way for Belgians in England and each goals is effectively a new Premier League record on the part.
Benteke’s fine form for Aston Villa towards the end of last season – 12 league goals under Tim Sherwood - saw him overtake Lukaku and persuade Liverpool to spend big on signing him this summer.
However, the Toffees’ record scorer isn’t about to give up yet and his double in the day’s early kick-off on the South Coast has taken his Premier League tally up to 44 goals – two clear of his rival.

It’s ironic that the two powerful strikers and fighting it out for a spot on the national team and now go head-to-head for the title of best centre-forward on Merseyside.
Benteke arguably has the better chance to shine as the Reds hope to challenge the top four this season, though doubts remain as to whether Brendan Rodgers’ style will help the striker or hinder him.
Lukaku, in contrast, has a team built to get the best out of him and against Southampton the 22-year-old proved that with the right service, he can be deadly in-front of goal.
