Southampton fans react on Twitter to Matt Targett performance v Everton

St Marys Southampton

The left-back did not have his best game against Everton this afternoon.

Southampton took on Everton at St Mary’s Stadium this afternoon in a game they would have been hoping to win after their excellent season at home last term. Meanwhile there are worries over Everton, who have not strengthened their squad to the level some might have imagined this summer.

However, Everton romped to victory.

The Toffees played a fantastic counter-attacking game with Romelu Lukaku scoring twice and Ross Barkley putting the finishing touches on proceedings.

For Southampton it was certainly a fixture to forget.

Despite playing some good football and having some chances they too often left themselves exposed defensively and could not handle the pace and strength of Lukaku, Barkley, James McCarthy and Arouna Kone.

One player who did not impress the Southampton faithful on Twitter was left-back Matt Targett.

He should have been taking advantage of having a striker playing on the wing in front of him but he found himself consistently outdone by Kone and Seamus Coleman.

When asked to go into physical battle he was often found frail and not a patch on usual left-back starter Ryan Bertrand.
