Report: Sunderland linked former Dick Advocaat favourite Ola Toivonen admits he wants exit from Rennes

Rennes Stade-Vilaine

The Swedish international is up for sale at Rennes in Ligue 1.

Sunderland were recently linked with a move for Ola Toivonon. In July The Mirror reported that a deal for the attacking midfielder was being considered.

Dick Advocaat managed the Swedish international at PSV Eindhoven and was believed to be keen on signing the player, who Rennes were considering selling for around £4 million.

Greek side PAOK Salonika and Turkish side Tranzonspor were also said to be keen on the player, and those two, along with Sunderland, have received a boost if still keen on his signature.

He has now made it clear that he would like to leave the French side this summer.

Toivonen told Foot Mercato that he was certain he wanted to leave the club but was not fussed where he went:

“I want to leave the club. I do not want to play in a club where they do not want me. "

"Yes, they want to sell me. We have a large staff currently. I understand why they want to sell me. They want to buy new players so they must sell more. That makes sense".

"I agreed to go. This is not a problem. Rennes must accept offers to sell me. They told me after last season that they would sell me. I said OK. This is not a problem. I have some offers but I do not know what the problem with Rennes for now.

"Yes, I have had offers.

“I do not know. I let my agent about the business. We'll see what happens this is all I can say."I ' had no information from my agent about the Ligue 1. I am open to everything. There is only two weeks, we have to see what will happen."

It looks like Toivonen has his heart set on an exit from Rennes as his first-team opportunities are not set to improve at the club, but is he what Sunderland need?

Advocaat is probably keen on his signature because of his history with the player and his relatively low price-tag.

But Toivonen is not going to guide Sunderland to safety. He is a good player, but nothing special. He is also not the type of forward they are after. He plays off the striker and Sunderland are believed to be after more of a target man striker for their system under the Dutch boss.
