Photos: Sunderland defender Younes Kaboul looks desperate after defeat, but Duncan Watmore celebrates first goal

The Black Cats were again punished today, by Norwich City.

Sunderland’s awful start to the season continued today, as they were again swept aside in the Premier League by a team they would have expected to beat.

They lost 3-1 to newly promoted Norwich City and were never truly in contention in a game in which, once again, they were in terrible form at the back.

Sebastian Coates and Younes Kaboul look like a sure-fire central defensive partnership if you want your team to finish bottom of the Premier League table and John O’Shea, for all his limitations, must be brought back into the fray.

As for the central midfield pair, who knows what was going on?

Lee Cattermole and Yann M’Vila are supposed to be tough tackling, take no-nonsense combatants. Today they were like puppies.

They were also toothless up front and something needs to change, fast.

The one shining light was the performance of Duncan Watmore. He came on, palyed ten times better than anyone else on the field in a Sunderland shirt, and scored his first goal for the club.

The former Hibernian loanee looked like he actually wanted to be there and will be hoping to have played his way into the starting line-up for next week against Swansea.
