Should Everton make a move for Rennes defender Fallou Diagne this summer?

The versatile defender could be of good use to Everton at the moment.

Everton have been in the market for a new defender this summer and although the arrival of Mason Holgate is a step in the right direction the youngster is surely one for the future.

They might have said the same about John Stones once, but even if Holgate does emerge as a first-teamer, Everton still need to strengthen at the back.

In fact they need both a right-back and centre-back, so is Fallou Diagne the perfect option?

The 26-year-old Senegalese defender is a strong and imposing defender who can play in both the right-back and central defensive positions.

Signed by Rennes from SC Freiburg in Germany last summer the former Metz man has struggled to settle at his new club.

With that in mind he is being linked with an exit away from the club this summer, with teams in Germany lining up to take him back to the Bundesliga.

Everton however would be bringing in a gem if they could get him through the door.

He would be relatively inexpensive and his versatility would add a great deal to the Everton back-line, he would certainly be an improvement on Sylvain Distin and Antolin Alcaraz from last term.

Realistically, his signing would have to come with another, more stellar, central defensive option. But Diagne could do a job in the Premier League – and at a cut-price.
