Report: Derby County interested in Frederic Gounongbe, Westerlo willing to sanction transfer

Derby County are looking to sign Gounongbe before the transfer window closes.

According to Belgian media outlet HLN, Derby County are looking to sign Frederic Gounongbe from Westerlo before the transfer window closes at the end of this month.

It is stated that the Rams have yet to officially open talks with the Belgian side concerning a transfer, but his entourage are expected to meet with the Midlands side this weekend, after Westerlo have faced Genk in the Jupiler Pro League.

He has just one year left on his contract with the Belgian side, and the report indicates that Westerlo are willing to sanction a transfer as they know they can make an sizeable transfer fee - rather than losing him for nothing next summer.

Who is Frederic Gounongbe?

Gounongbe, 27, is a striker from Benin, who has spent his entire career in Belgium. He currently plays for Westerlo, but has also spent spells wit Zulte-Waregem, Zaventem and Brussels FC.

However, it has been with Westerlo where Gounongbe has truly come into his own as a striker following his signing last summer. He scored nine goals in 17 games last season - with all of them coming in the first eight games of the campaign.

However, he then suffered a bad injury which meant he played just six more games across the whole season, and could never get back into top form. The report suggests he is still far from match fit, but he has started this campaign in impressive form - scoring two goals in three games, despite not playing a full 90 minutes yet.

The difference between the Jupiler Pro League and the Championship is not that wide, and if Gounongbe can continue his impressive goalscoring form, whilst also getting back to full fitness, he could be a great signing for Derby.
