According to a report in the Daily Mail, Arsenal are in talks with left-back Nacho Monreal over a new three-year deal with the club hopeful an agreement will be reached in the coming weeks.
The former Malaga man has established himself ahead of Kieran Gibbs as the club’s number one left-back, making 28 Premier League appearances last season.
However, such reports have so far proven inconclusive and boss Arsene Wenger evidently wants him to remain at the Emirates as the club look to extend his current deal which expires in 2017.
“Arsenal are set to tie left-back Nacho Monreal down to a new contract. Talks over a new three-year deal for the defender are underway and the Gunners want to secure the defender's long-term future in the coming weeks,” the Daily Mail state.
Aside from nailing down a regular spot at left-back, Monreal showed last season he is also capable of moving into the middle during the club’s apparent injury crisis at the back.
One game in particular which stands out was the 2-0 victory at Sunderland in October where he partnered Per Mertesacker at centre-back, putting in a truly remarkable performance.
At 29, the 16-cap Spain international still has a number of years at the top his game and extending his current deal by an extra year or two would be considered a logical decision by the club.
