Liverpool flop Alberto Aquilani’s Sporting Lisbon debut postponed due to injury

Alberto Aquilani spent one injury-plagued season with Liverpool having been signed as a replacement for Xabi Alonso.

The injury problems that dogged Alberto Aquilani’s ill-fated spell with Liverpool look to have continued at new club Sporting Lisbon after the midfielder was ruled out of a debut appearance against Tondela.

Signed as a direct replacement for the Real Madrid-bound Xabi Alonso, the Italian managed just 18 stop start appearances in the Premier League during his first season with the Reds.

Loaned to Juventus and AC Milan respectively over the following two campaigns, Aquilani was most recently with fellow Serie A side Fiorentina.

Something of a regular for the Viola, the 31-year-old moved on to Sporting Lisbon this summer on a free transfer.

Recruited on a three-year deal, the midfielder’s start to life at the Portuguese club has been now suffered a setback.

According to a report in A Bola, an injury picked up during the week means Aquilani will miss Sporting’s league opener.

The Italian has yet to make his debut for the Lisbon giants having previously sat out of last weekend’s Super Cup clash with Benfica.

Having struggled with similar issues at his last non-Italian club, the playmaker will now most likely be focused on ensuring history does not repeat itself.
