Should West Ham move for Mathieu Flamini as a Joey Barton alternative?

The Arsenal midfielder is set to be released this month.

This week there was a storm brewing at West Ham as they looked to bring in Joey Barton on a free transfer.

The midfield general was released by QPR this summer after they suffered relegation to the Championship. Despite being the club’s most consistent performer last season wages needed to be slashed by the club, so letting Barton go became inevitable.

Slaven Bilic seemed keen on signing the player but a backlash from fans saw the deal collapse and Barton remains a free agent.

West Ham however must still be in the hunt for a cheap midfield option – and it looks like one might be cropping up on the horizon.

It is reported by ESPN today that Arsenal are all set to grant Mathieu Flamini a free transfer away from The Emirates.

Since the emergence of Francis Coquelin the Frenchman has struggled for first-team football and is due to have his contract terminated so he can find another team.

Should West Ham consider him?

Flamini is undoubtedly good at what he does. They could offer him the ease of remaining in London and more football than Arsenal could have given him.

He also offers them versatility, as he is capable of playing in several midfield and defensive positions.

His fitness would not be an issue, as he always maintains a good level of personal fitness even when out of training.

If the wages were right Flamini might be the perfect cheap option until the end of the season.
