Paul Merson says John Stones must leave Everton 'as soon as possible' for Chelsea move

The Sky Sports pundit believes Stones must take the opportunity to play alongside John Terry at Stamford Bridge.

Everton defender John Stones has been heavily linked with a move to Chelsea in recent weeks. The 21-year-old is being considered as the best option to eventually replace John Terry at the London club and it has caused quite a furore already.

Everton are adamant that he is not for sale, but former Arsenal player and current Sky Sports pundit believes Stones should make the switch for the good of his career.

He told Sky Sports today:

“But he [Stones] needs to get there as soon as possible. If Chelsea are going to buy him they need to buy him now to work with John Terry over this season and maybe next season – but definitely this season.

“And John will help him. A player of John Terry’s calibre with look after the player. He will talk him through [the games] and even if he plays 10 games in a season I think it’s better than playing 30 for Everton.”

There is no doubt that playing with John Terry would be a massive boost for the player, but how much game time would he actually get at Chelsea?

The fact is he would struggle to remove Gary Cahill from his place in the starting line-up and then there is one of France’s top talents battling for the same position, in the form of Kurt Zouma.

Playing alongside Terry might very well do him good, but playing will do him much more.

At Everton he is an undoubted starter every weekend alongside a fellow England international in Phil Jagielka.

Whilst the point is obvious, Stones could play 40-plus games for Everton this season, or scrape 20 at Chelsea.
