Alderweireld and Vertonghen look to be Tottenham’s first-choice centre-back pairing.
The Belgian star said: “We always talk, we used to play together. He’s a great defender and I know how to play with him – but I know how to play with the other guys too.”
Although Vertonghen has suggested he can play alongside other players, it is his partnership with Alderweireld that looks the strongest for Spurs.
Although the Lilywhites lost to Manchester United last weekend, it was not for a lack of trying, and the Spurs defence looked far more composed during that game than at any time last season.
They went 1-0 behind without having actually let United take a shot on target, and they certainly did enough to draw the game at Old Trafford.
It is this defensive strength which Mauricio Pochettino is hoping will be enough to push the club over the line at into the top four places, and although the loss to United hurts their ambitions, there was enough in that showing to suggest a promising future is ahead.
