Is Newcastle's faith in Cisse the reason they won't sign Austin?

The 31-year-old remains at St James' Park, with no movement all summer on the link with the Queens Park Rangers forward.

Could Newcastle United's faith in Papiss Cisse be why they haven't tried - and won't be trying - harder to sign Charlie Austin?

According to Sky Bet, Newcastle are favourites to sign the QPR man - but many have suggested their reported interest is mainly media driven. The odds, meanwhile, have fluctuated so much this summer it's almost unreal.

Steve McClaren's men may be waiting for the clock to run down, of course, to drive Austin's price down with it. But the suggestion is plenty of other sides are showing far more interest in the 26-year-old. And Newcastle already have Aleksandar Mitrovic, Ayoze Perez - and Cisse.

Nowadays, you can't have enough strikers. But the noise coming out of St James' Park of late suggests they will be passing up any opportunity to sign the QPR striker.

And, after Cisse's goal against Southampton, it could simply be the case they are placing their faith in the man who has retained the no.9 shirt on Tyneside.

Indeed, in terms of clinical finishing and goals, Cisse is one of the best around based on his Premier League record. The issue, of course, remains his fitness.

But, with Mitrovic, Perez and co in toe, maybe the Magpies feel relying on the 30-year-old's knees to hold up this time around is a gamble worth taking?
