HITC Sport understands they have backed away from Jordan Rhodes deal as they look to land former loanee.
HITC Sport understands that the Black Cats have made a new move for Borini following an injury to Adam Johnson, as the Italian can also play out wide if needed.
Sunderland have also backed away from a possible deal for Blackburn's Jordan Rhodes, as the deal was too expensive and Dick Advocaat was unsure how much of an improvement on his current options he would be.
But now the Dutchman has given his approval to a new bid for Borini and sporting director Lee Congerton, who knows Borini and Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers from their time at Chelsea, has teed up the deal - which will be an initial loan.
Borini has already enjoyed a hugely successful spell already at the Stadium of Light. In the 2013-14 season he became a huge fans favourite, scoring seven goals and also helping them to the League Cup final, and such were his displays they agreed a deal worth £14million for him - only for the deal to be rejected by the Italian.
He instead returned to Liverpool hoping to battle for a first-team place, but he failed in that quest and has again been told by Brendan Rodgers that he can leave, and he had seemed set on a move back to Italy with Fiorentina leading the chase.
However, Sunderland have now re-entered the chase and HITC Sport understands that the Black Cats are hoping for a quick decision from the 24-year-old as they have other forward targets - including Manchester United's Adnan Januzaj - who they are also hoping to sign along with him.
