Former Tottenham defender Vlad Chiriches was just unfortunate in North London, claims Bortolo Mutti.
Vlad Chiriches was just unlucky at Tottenham, former Napoli technical director Bortolo Mutti has told Tuttomercatoweb.
The centre-back signed for Napoli this summer after two underwhelming seasons in North London.
Mutti believes Chiriches can be a big asset for Napoli, who finished fifth in Serie A last season.
He said: "Chiriches? He is a great central defender, you have to trust him and believe in his quality.
"He had bad luck at Tottenham, but had to go, and is a player who has always had great physical and technical qualities.
"The problems of defence last year came from too much audacity offensively. From a tactical (perspective) last year Napoli missed so much for those who had his qualities."
Chiriches is 25-years-old and was in need of a fresh start after failing to hold down a place in the starting line-up at White Hart Lane.
He was signed by Andre Villas-Boas, who was sacked just months after he was bought, following a poor run of results.
He is experienced at international level with Romania, and may find the slower pace of Italian football more suitable.
Certainly there was little shown by Chiriches to justify the description of his talent as 'great', but the opportunity is there for him to go and prove a point.
He would do well to emulate Stevan Savic who flopped badly at Manchester City but went onto become a key player for Fiorentina and really establish himself, this summer earning a move to Atletico Madrid.
