Everton have agreed a deal to sign Barnsley defender Mason Holgate with the player agreeing personal terms and passing a medical at Goodison Park, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.
Holgate has attracted the interest of a number of clubs higher up the football pyramid after emerging onto the scene with Barnsley last season.
The teenager made 22 appearances for the League One club in 2014-15 and his performances have seen him likened to former Barnsley defender and current Everton and England international John Stones.
Manchester United took Holgate on trial earlier this summer, while Bournemouth also had a bid accepted by Barnsley for the defender.
However, Everton have won the race for the central defender's signature as Roberto Martinez looks to bolster his defensive options before the close of the transfer window.
Holgate is set to sign a long-term deal at Everton after coming through his medical on Wednesday and will become the club's fourth signing of the summer.
