Villa take on United in a rare Friday night clash, with Richards determined to perform for his current employers because of his Manchester City roots.
Richards played well in the club’s opening game of the season against AFC Bournemouth and will be looking to carry that momentum on and into this game.
“Obviously playing at City for so long, games against United were the big ones for me,” he told avfc.co.uk.
“You relished facing them for bragging rights in the city. I'm sure it's the same when Villa play Birmingham City - you have to win these matches.”
“Now I'm delighted to be at Villa but my affinity to this fixture is still strong. They'll always be special games to me, coming up against United.”
Extra security at the back
What Richards has done in terms of the Aston Villa defence, is add a bit more security and experience across the backline.
Although he played in Serie A last season, it’s obvious that he’s played in the Premier League before because he doesn’t look out of place or off the pace in terms of attacking play.
Granted, Villa have only come up against Bournemouth so far but it was very important for the mentality of the player for him to get off to a good start this season.
If he can help to shut down the Manchester United attack on Friday, then it will only add to his confidence and momentum ahead of other tough tests.
